A non-probate asset is an asset a decease has designated a beneficiary too. Some examples of a non-probate asset include IRAs, 401(k), life insurance policies and annuities. These may not require estate administration or court filings as they would pass directly to the beneficiary so named. An important and crucial piece of updating a financial plan is also reviewing beneficiary designations to all your accounts and assets. A good time to check your beneficiaries is when you have updated your estate documents, the birth of a child, divorce, death or retirement.
